Going Cold Turkey?

The first reading was a piggyback from what I presented in class on Thursday. It also touched based on the open conversation my peers and I shared. Which was all very interesting to me. I guess I never thought to realize the way search engines worked. I solely used it when I needed and never put much thought into it after that. Unless of course I was fact checking. However it is interesting to know that what I do search in the future google will curate results based on my searching history. Which I feel like is not helpful at all. If I wanted results based on what I usually tend to search, then why search? Usually I am searching because I need something new as in information or products. So is that really entirely helpful? Not sure.

I will say though, the second article is what really put things into perspective for me. Reading Hill’s experience of basically going cold turkey on all five platforms was intriguing to me. I’m going to be completely honest with you, that idea excites me. I regularly take breaks from my social apps every now and then for my own sanity, now I wonder if I should do that for my own protection. But at the same time it is a far fetch idea for me to go completely off with no expectation of return. Having Facebook is helpful to me as I am able to connect to my extended family members who live in other states and countries. Sure, I can go off Facebook to protect myself and my data but then what? To connect with my family quick I would have to just download another app such as WhatsApp which I am sure is also not a safe app to use as well. So for now there aren’t really any helpful alternatives besides doing things the old fashion way and sending out mail or postcards to the people I love. And that’s if it ever reaches them. With a message that doesn’t get delivered I can just resend it, but am I really going to keep resending mail all the time? Probably not.

Going cold turkey sounds like an enticing idea and something I could potentially do but as of right now with my age and my career, it is an idea that will stay in the back of my mind until I can bump it up. Props to those who do it though, I want all the secrets.
